THE EXPEDITION

After their first winter ascents of Gasherbrum II, The North Face® Expedition Team is getting ready for the next project: the first winter ascent of Nanga Parbat 8125 meters.
This Expedition will feature only Simone Moro and Denis Urubko without Cory Richards; the third of the trio on the last GII winter ascent.

The aim of the expedition is to realize the first winter ascent of Nagna Parbat 8125 meters, a mountain also known with the name of "killer mountain" due to the difficulties and the tragedies happened during the attempts to conquer the summit between 1930 and 1953. Also after that years a lot of fatalities involved alpinists of different nationalities on Nanga Parbat.

As it happens

Persistent Snow – Plans to Depart For the Summit Push Today Goes On Hold

Nanga Parbat Base Camp 4230m, -14C, persistent snow.

Yesterday morning and especially yesterday evening the two calls to Karl Gabl left little doubts that the weather would get worse. We were hoping to leave but Gabl is never wrong. It has been snowing for 24 hours straight and it seems like it will go on.

Avalanche danger is very high, so this morning we didn’t move. It would have been a great act of heroic stupidity. Today we will shovel snow and wait. The Polish team came to ask for snowshoes so they could stomp the snow around their camp and open a corridor between theirs and ours. So… The weather report and the Nanga for the moment say no..
